Explanation of each UTM Parameter:

  1. Campaign Source (utm_source)
Purpose: Identifies the source of the traffic.
    Example: google, facebook, newsletter, linkedin.
Use Case: This parameter tells you where the traffic is coming from. It’s mandatory because understanding the source is critical for attributing traffic correctly.
    Example URL:
    https://example.com?utm_source=google
  2. Campaign Medium (utm_medium)
Purpose: Specifies the medium used in the campaign.
Example: cpc (cost per click), email, social, referral.
Use Case: This parameter explains how the traffic was delivered. For instance, if you’re running ads on Google, the medium might be cpc. If it’s an email campaign, the medium would be email.
    Example URL:
    https://example.com?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc
  3. Campaign Name (utm_campaign)
Purpose: Names the specific campaign to differentiate between multiple campaigns within the same medium or source.
    Example: spring_sale, black_friday, launch_event.
Use Case: This is useful to track the performance of a specific campaign. For instance, if you’re running multiple ad campaigns on Google, each with a different goal, you can track them by campaign name.
    Example URL:
    https://example.com?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=spring_sale
  4. Campaign ID (utm_id)
Purpose: An optional identifier to uniquely track and attribute campaigns, often used in conjunction with ad platforms or external tracking systems.
    Example: 12345, abcd1234.
Use Case: When you’re using advanced analytics systems or managing multiple campaigns across platforms, the campaign ID provides a unique way to attribute traffic and performance.
    Example URL:
    https://example.com?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=spring_sale&utm_id=12345
  5. Campaign Content (utm_content)
Purpose: Differentiates between different variations of content or ads within the same campaign.
    Example: banner_ad, video_ad, cta_button, text_link.
Use Case: If you have multiple creatives (e.g., banner ads vs. text links) for the same campaign, you can track which variation performs better.
    Example URL:
    https://example.com?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=spring_sale&utm_content=banner_ad
  6. Campaign Term (utm_term)
Purpose: Tracks keywords associated with paid search campaigns.
    Example: buy_shoes_online, best_sneakers.
Use Case: This parameter is mainly used in PPC (Pay-Per-Click) campaigns to identify the specific keyword that triggered the ad.
    Example URL:
    https://example.com?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=spring_sale&utm_term=buy_shoes_online
